{"id":30964,"date":"2026-02-17T20:01:54","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T20:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.retronews.com\/?p=30964"},"modified":"2026-04-01T09:28:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T09:28:56","slug":"castlevania-master-system-demo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.retronews.com\/staging\/guide\/castlevania-master-system-demo\/","title":{"rendered":"Castlevania set to Haunt Master System:  Demo Now Live"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br \/>A <strong>Sega Master System<\/strong> port of the original Castlevania game is being worked on by a <strong>Master System<\/strong> homebrew developer going by the name of <strong>Xfixium<\/strong>, and it\u2019s coming along nicely so far, with a demo of the game now available to download from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smspower.org\/forums\/19386-SMSCastlevaniaHomebrew?start=100#137435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SMS Power<\/a> forums.<br \/><br \/><br \/><strong>Castlevania<\/strong> was originally released by <strong>Konami<\/strong> for the Japan-only Famicom Disk System in 1986, before receiving a cartridge release on the NES in the West a year later, and, of course, the series has gone on to be an enduring success ever since becoming one of video games\u2019 most enduring franchises 40 years since its first release. Indeed, the \u201c-Vania\u201d suffix is now used to define a whole genre of games, in the word \u201cMetroidvania\u201d!<br \/><br \/>And while <strong>Castlevania<\/strong> would eventually make its way onto Sega consoles with 1994\u2019s Castlevania: Bloodlines for Genesis\/Mega Drive, the original 18-bit <strong>Castlevania<\/strong> game did not see a release on a <strong>Sega<\/strong> console, until this forthcoming <strong>Master System<\/strong> fan port, that is! One of the great things about the contemporary homebrew scene is that we get the chance to experience \u201cwhat if\u201d moments, often getting the opportunity to play games that were never released for our favorite consoles back in the day!
