We’ve been following the progress of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Game Boy Advance homebrew puzzle platformer Escape 2049 since its crowdfunding campaign launched on Kickstarter back in January. Sadly, the project’s Kickstarter campaign failed to reach its goal, raising just £11,036 GBP of its £25,342 GBP goal.
Undeterred, Escape 2049‘s developer, Orion Soft, relaunched Escape 2049 on Broke Studios’ Homebrew Factory physical publishing platform, as we have reported previously. Unfortunately, the game’s month-long pre-order campaign ended yesterday (October 14, 2026) without hitting the minimum number of pre-orders required to go into production.
It just goes to show that not every retro gaming crowdfunding campaign can smash its target, even if it’s from a developer with a proven track record. We guess there isn’t an infinite amount of money to go round in the retro gaming scene, and it’s simply not possible for every single project to be a success.
We sincerely hope that this doesn’t deter Orion Soft from developing further homebrew titles, and we at RetroNews wish Orion Soft the very best of luck with all its future endeavours! And who knows, maybe Orion Soft might even get the chance to revive Escape 2049 someday, and perhaps it could be a case of “third time lucky”?
