The market for portable consoles, especially those allowing for memory card use to install emulators of classic games, is currently facing scrutiny due to health-related concerns rather than piracy. Notably, the European Union has banned the Anbernic RG353VS, a popular and affordable model, due to its high lead content in solder—up to 28% by weight—exceeding permissible limits under EU regulations on hazardous substances in electronic equipment. Although the device is not directly harmful to users, its significant lead concentration poses serious environmental risks upon disposal, potentially contaminating landfills.
The situation is further complicated as the console often comes bundled with illegally downloaded ROMs, prompting AliExpress to remove it from their offerings and warn consumers about the associated risks and legality issues.
