Sega’s classic Shinobi has been unofficially ported to the Neo Geo system, marking a significant milestone for fans of retro gaming. This fan-driven project was developed by h0ffman, a programmer known for his work on other retro game adaptations. The port brings the iconic 1987 arcade title, originally released on Sega’s System 16 hardware, to SNK’s Neo Geo platform, including the Neo Geo CD, MVS (arcade), and AES (home console) systems.
The project is nearing completion, with h0ffman stating that a release is “very soon.” Gameplay previews have been shared online, showcasing scrolling environments, enemy sprites, and functional mechanics. The developer has also streamed progress updates on platforms like Twitch, allowing fans to follow the development process closely.
This port arrives at an exciting time for Shinobi fans. A new Shinobi game is currently in development by Lizardcube, known for their work on Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and Streets of Rage 4. While this official project explores modern possibilities for the franchise, the Neo Geo port serves as a nostalgic celebration of its roots.
