The Orange FM Game Boy cartridge, developed by Orangeglo, transforms the classic handheld console into a fully functional FM radio. This innovative cartridge is designed to fit into the Game Boy’s cartridge slot and includes both a built-in antenna and an option for an external antenna, making it a versatile and nostalgic way to listen to FM radio.
The cartridge supports frequencies from 64 to 108 MHz, accommodating most global FM broadcast standards. Users can tune stations digitally with options for 100 or 200 kHz spacing and even adjust de-emphasis settings (50us or 75us) based on regional requirements. It also features RDS (Radio Data System) support, allowing listeners to view station information and song details directly on the Game Boy’s screen.
Older Game Boy models, such as the original DMG and Game Boy Color, can output mono audio through their internal speakers or stereo audio via the cartridge’s headphone jack. For newer models like the Game Boy Advance and SP, audio must be routed through the cartridge’s headphone port. The Super Game Boy even allows FM audio to be played through a connected TV, adding a quirky retro touch.
The built-in antenna offers basic reception for strong local stations, but users can attach external antennas—such as headphones or telescopic antennas—to improve signal strength and reliability. This flexibility makes it easy to experiment with different setups for optimal performance.
While primarily aimed at retro gaming enthusiasts, the Orange FM cartridge has generated excitement for its creative use of vintage hardware. It’s available as a DIY kit for experienced soldering enthusiasts or as a pre-assembled product through select vendors. The project highlights how classic gaming consoles can be repurposed in innovative ways, blending nostalgia with modern functionality.
