A Vectrex Mini prototype has been previewed at this year’s Gamescom, following which, the official Vectrex account unveiled the console online via a post on X.
To be honest, of all the games consoles ever released, the Vectrex is possibly the last one we’d have expected to get a modern “mini” release, but it’s certainly an exciting proposition! The Vectrex Mini is an all-in-one console and screen unit, like its big brother, the original Vectrex, but it will be around one third of the size of the original Vectrex.
The original Vectrex was first released in North America in 1982, and it was notable for its unique vector-based display, but it was not a commercial success, due to the unfortunate timing of its release, coming just a year before America’s video game crash, which resulted in the machine being discontinued a year later, in 1984.
Despite the Vectrex not being a commercial success at the time, its unique nature has led to the machine being beloved by retro gamers and collectors over the years that followed, so an accessible Vectrex Mini for today’s retro gaming fans is a very intriguing proposition indeed, so while details on the Vectrex Mini are currently scare, we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for further updates!
