City Hunter, a 1990 Sunsoft PC Engine side-scrolling action game based on a popular manga from the long-running Shonen Jump anthology, is to get a modern remake for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC, some 35 years after its original release.
As well as spawning a PC Engine video game, City Hunter was also adapted into an anime series and a live-action Hong Kong movie.
The City Hunter game is based on the first season of the anime adaptation and is described by publisher Red Art Games as following “Tokyo’s renowned ‘cleaner,’ Ryo Saeba, as he faces off against a sinister megacorporation whose conspiracy threatens the world.”
The remake of the City Hunter game is the latest development in the ongoing revival of the acclaimed Japanese developer and publisher Sunsoft, which we have been following at Retro News, and which has so far included a number of new releases, such as a compilation of classic Sunsoft games, and a documentary on the company’s rise, fall and revival.
The modern remake of City Hunter will be published by Red Art Games, and pre-orders will open at 10 AM CEST today (Friday, September 26, 2025, ahead of the game’s scheduled worldwide release next year, on February 26, 2026. The game can also be wishlisted on Steam.
