ZPF is a new shoot ’em up for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, on which we have previously reported, that was developed following a successful Kickstarter campaign, and while the game was released to its Kickstarter backers a while back, it will be getting a public release for Genesis/Mega Drive later this week, when it will be available to buy as a physical cartridge from November 20, 2025, via its publisher, Mega Cat Studios.

“The release of ZPF marks a meaningful milestone for the three-letter game title community,” said James Deighan, CEO of Mega Cat Studios. “It’s the result of ambitious ideas, careful craftsmanship, and a team that never shies away from pushing boundaries on the Mega Drive with the ZPF team. We’re excited to finally share it with the world.”

There will be three different editions of ZPF for Genesis/Mega Drive fans to choose from, which are: the Standard Edition CIB ($59.99), which includes the game cartridge, a clamshell case, and a manual; the Limited Edition CIB ($150.00), which includes a custom laser-etched cartridge, clamshell case, and manual; and a cart only option ($49.99).

Key features of ZPF include hordes of screen-filling bosses; an engaging and satisfying scoring system that rewards boldness; six-plus levels; three unique characters, each with their own play style; and a high-energy chiptune soundtrack.

Developed by ZPF Team, ZPF has been described as,  “an explosively high-energy 16-bit shooter inspired by classic shooters such as Lords of Thunder, Elemental Master, and Thunder Force 3 & 4.”

Don’t have a Genesis or Mega Drive but like the sound of ZPF? Good news! ZPF will also release digitally on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and the Xbox family of consoles in early 2026.
