Castlevania set to Haunt Master System: Demo Now Live

Castlevania Master System title screen

A Sega Master System port of the original Castlevania game is being worked on by a Master System homebrew developer going by the name of Xfixium, and it’s coming along nicely so far, with a demo of the game now available to download from the SMS Power forums.

Castlevania was originally released by Konami for the Japan-only Famicom Disk System in 1986, before receiving a cartridge release on the NES in the West a year later, and, of course, the series has gone on to be an enduring success ever since becoming one of video games’ most enduring franchises 40 years since its first release. Indeed, the “-Vania” suffix is now used to define a whole genre of games, in the word “Metroidvania”!

And while Castlevania would eventually make its way onto Sega consoles with 1994’s Castlevania: Bloodlines for Genesis/Mega Drive, the original 18-bit Castlevania game did not see a release on a Sega console, until this forthcoming Master System fan port, that is! One of the great things about the contemporary homebrew scene is that we get the chance to experience “what if” moments, often getting the opportunity to play games that were never released for our favorite consoles back in the day! And this Master System port of Castlevania from Xfixium is a prime example.
