We recently reviewed Eastasiasoft’s canine puzzle platformer Pogui, which utterly charmed us, and now Eastasiasoft has returned to the puzzle platformer genre, this time with a feline theme, in the form of 1 CatLine, on the announcement of which previously reported, and now we’ve had the chance to play 1 CatLine for ourselves, we’re delighted to report that 1 CatLine is just as charming as Eastasiasoft’s canine predecessor!
The aim of 1 Catline is a very simple one. All you have to do is collect the single jewel on each screen. Sounds easy enough, right? The only trouble is, that there aren’t enough platforms on screen to get you to said jewels! However, luckily for you, additional platforms can be activated by hitting switches in the right order, or, if no switches are present, by taking control of your feline friend to create a titular “catline” to use as a platform. Placing your “pl-catform” in exactly the right position is essential, as is pixel-perfect jumping from platform to platform. Fortunately, you have even more than the nine lives normally afforded to cats, as in 1 CatLine it’s impossible to die, so some trial and error can be deployed to ensure your feline friend is in just to right place to help you reach that jewel. Having to create your own platforms is slightly reminiscent of Doodle Jump, except instead of drawing the platforms, you stretch your cat out to create them.
Switching between characters to solve puzzles in games has been a popular mechanic in video games for decades, perhaps most memorably in the home computer classic Head Over Heels, which as we reported, will be receiving a very belated sequel and 1 CatLine uses the character swapping mechanic to great effect, employing it with single button presses to swap between your human and feline protagonists.
Much like Pogui, 1 CatLine has simple, but endearingly cute graphics, and again, like Pogui, 1 CatLine’s simplicity is a strength, and there are no enemies to be fought, just hazards to be negotiated, and problems to be solved. In addition to its simple but charming graphics, 1 CatLine also has a suitably chilled soundtrack that helps to create the perfect relaxing ambience for its laid-back puzzle-solving and platforming.
There really is very little to complain about in 1 CatLine. At first, I was troubled by the game’s lack of save function, but it turns out upon returning to the game, you can simply select the screen you were up to when you last played, meaning a save function is completely unnecessary anyway. Similarly, when I tried to pause the game, it seemed that there was no way to return to the paused game. However, with no risk of death, there’s actually no need to pause the game, and you can simply leave it running without risking any negative consequences. 1 CatLine is such an enjoyable game that finding things to be critical about feels like nitpicking (or should that be flea-picking, in the case of a cat?!) I do, however, think that’CatLine’ would’ve been a much cleaner name for the. game than ‘1 CatLine’. But that really, really doesn’t matter, does it?
With 80 captivating screens that increase in difficulty as you progress, to puzzle and leap your way around, 1 CatLine offers plenty of challenge for its budget price, even if you’re probably unlikely to replay it once you’ve reached the “finishing CatLine”. Even if you were to only play 1 Catline for a weekend, you’d certainly fweel that it was a weekend well spent, and you’d get more than your money’s worth from the game.
