Master of Syougi has been confirmed as this week’s Arcade Archives release by Hamster Corporation, following last week’s release of Final Lap, on which we reported previously.
Unlike most recent Arcade Archives releases, Master of Syougi will not be receiving a simultaneous Arcade Archives 2 release, presumably because the time Attack mode that Arcade Archives 2 releases add to the games would not be appropriate in the case of this week’s release.
But what is Master of Syougi? To be honest, it’s not a game we’re familiar with, here at Retro News, but it turns out that Master of Syougi is a 1995 arcade game developed and released by SNK for their Neo Geo MVS arcade system. The game is a video game adaptation of the Japanese chess-like board game shogi. And Hamster Corporation states that the game offers: “both standard shogi and the simplified “hasami shogi, ” adding that: “adjustable settings to display beginner guides or play with handicaps (piece drops), the game is designed to be enjoyed by everyone from novices to true masters!”
Master of Syougi was originally released in Japan under the Japanese title “Shōgi no Tatsujin: Master of Syougi,” and the game has previously seen home releases on Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CD, Neo Geo Pocket. And Neo Geo Pocket Color.
So, whether you’re a shogi master, or like us, you’ve never even heard of shogi, you should be able to enjoy playing the game in Master of Syougi when it receives it Arcade Archives release on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 tomorrow (April 2, 2026).
