The Evercade Game of the Month program allows owners of Evercade VS, VS-R, EXP, EXP-R and Alpha consoles the chance to download and play a new indie game every month from April to October, simply by updating the machine’s system software, with the game remaining playable until the system software is updated again.
Then, at the start of each year, all of the previous year’s Evercade Game of the Month titles are compiled on one of Evercade’s Indie Heroes cartridges, with next year’s volume set to be the fifth in the Indie Heroes series.
The Evercade Game of the Month program went on hiatus in 2025, when it was replaced by the Evercade Highlight of the Month program, as we reported previously. This program was similar, except the downloadable games were taken from previous Evercade cartridge releases, so there was obviously no Indie Heroes cartridge released this year, as there weren’t any new indie titles to compile.
However, after a year of Evercade Highlight of the Month titles, Evercade Game of the Month made its return yesterday, when the game BioMenace Remastered went live for users of compatible Evercade hardware.
The game is a remaster of the 1993 shareware PC run ‘n’ gun title BioMenace, which was developed by James Norwood, who would go on to work on games in series such as Duke Nukem and Heroes of Might and Magic, and Norwood has given his full blessing to this remastered version of his game.
Unlike most Evercade Game of the Month titles, which offer the chance to play the full game, this version of BioMenace Remastered includes only the first of the game’s five episodes, in keeping with BioMenace’s shareware origins. All five episodes of BioMenace Remastered will be included on next year’s Indie Heroes volume 5 cartridge, however, and the full version of BioMenace Remastered has also been released on Steam.
