Well, I don’t think many gamers had Commodore announcing a flip phone today on their retro bingo cards. The new phone from Commodore, which recently released the C64 Ultimate, has been described as a mix between a smartphone and a dumbphone, with a classic flip design reminiscent of the early 2000s. The phone has been called Callback, and was announced by a stylised trailer showing off the design, and some of the features as well as colours ot will be available in. The tagline is “less scroll, more soul”. Pre-orders go live on June 30th, with the price tag being about $400.
To keep the package retro, Commodore has included FM radio and SID chips that they say are “audiophile-grade”, and that it will have no social media or conventional phone operating system, instead going for the Commodore x Sailfish OS, which “puts privacy first”. The reaction on social media has so far been quite cold, with many Commodore fans saying this feels like a cheap cash-in, using a cheap phone and slapping Commodore on the box. Time will tell if the community will warm to it.
