Snatcher, Hideo Kojima’s acclaimed graphic adventure was first released in 1988 in Japan only on the MSX2 and PC-8801.
The game would later, famously, be ported to Sega CD/Mega-CD in 1994, which was the game’s only official release in English, but Japan also received a PlayStation port of Snatcher in 1996.
As well as being known for Snatcher, Hideo Kojima also famously created the Metal Gear games, and, more recently, the Death Stranding games, so this new fan hack is notable as it finally gives us the chance to enjoy one of the acclaimed auteur’s early PlayStation releases in English. In fact, such is Kojima’s reputation that we’re rather surprised that an official English language translation of the PS1 version of Snatcher hasn’t materialized at some point over the past 30 years! But for now, at least, we have this unofficial fan translation to enjoy.
The PlayStation port of Snatcher was never officially translated into English, but now, 30 years on from its Japanese release, it has received an English translation, which also restrores some of the more graphic scenes that were censored on the original Japanese PlayStation release, but which remained on the released disc as unused assets. The translation covers the complete script of the game, with all 39 scene banks, and every menu, verb, item and location label.
The English fan translation of the PlayStation version of Snatcher is available to download now from romhack.ing, where you can also find the fan translations of the Famicom game Mahjaventure and the GameCube version of Dr.Mario, on which we reported previously.
