We wouldn’t normally cover politics here on RetroNews, I mean, why would we?
But when the British daily newspaper The Metro reports that a political candidate has called on Sega to release Shenmue 4, and to re-open its Sega World arcade in London, that’s something worth reporting on.
Admittedly, the political candidate in question wears a rubbish bin on his head and refers to himself as an “intergalactic space warrior,” by the name of “Count Binface,” but he has genuinely stood in UK parliamentary elections, and next month he will be standing in another, when he takes on Reform UK’s Nigel Farage in a by-election in the English constituency of Clacton.
Let’s hope Sega takes heed of Count Binface’s perfectly reasonable demands!
While Count Binface is obviously a joke candidate, and he is, in reality, a character played by a comedy writer, albeit one who does, as we say, genuinely stand in political elections, so it’s nonetheless refreshing to hear a politician (of sorts) speaking about video games in a positive way, rather than blaming them for all of modern society’s ills, which a much more common stance taken by politicians!
SegaWorld London opened in London’s Trocadero complex in 1996, where it remained for just three years, before closing down in 1999, and we applaud Count Binface’s dedication to re-opening the venue! At the height of Sega’s popularity, SegaWorld arcades were opened across the globe, although today, only Japan remains, unless Count Binface gets his way, of course!
As for Count Binface’s other demand of Sega, the original Shenmue was released on Dreamcast in 1999, with the most recent installment in the series, Shenmue III, set to receive an enhanced port for modern formats later this year, as we reported previously, and if Count Binface gats his way, the Shenmue saga won’t end there!
