Voidface is a new retro-inspired shoot ‘em that sets out to combine the two genres of the bullet hell shmup and the boss rush game.
The game’s publisher, Mad Mushroom, describes Voidface as: “an arcade style shooter where players must dodge a ridiculous amount of projectiles in fast-paced fights against 27 seriously difficult bosses across 9 stages. With only one life (two on easy mode), dying is part of the game, and players will need determination to conquer each boss; especially the powerful superbosses known as Titans!”
But, apparently, “there’s more to Voidface than running and gunning. Spells are a game-changer and can give you the upper hand you need to win on Hard mode.”
Mad Mushroom is also keen to emphasize the high difficulty level of Voidface, saying that the game is, “intensely challenging, “adding: “No bones about it, VOIDFACE is HARD. Only the most determined will be able to conquer all 12 levels and bosses in both Easy and Hard modes. Do you have what it takes?”
The game has been developed by Frog Hat Labs, which is is a relatively new indie game studio from a group of developers, artists, and musicians, who say that their aim is: “making games they’d want to play themselves.”
Voidface will be Frog Hat Labs’ first release on Steam, on which it will launch on August 18, 2026, and where you can now download a free demo of the game.
We’re certainly fans of the ‘bullet hell’ subgenre here at RetroNews, having recently reviewed and enjoyed three such games, in the forms of Mechaconda, Blast’N Bounty, and Viral Reload EX.
