Commodore Revives TAC-2 Joystick

We’ve reported previously on projects by the current company now using the iconic Commodore name, such as a rather unlikely new flip phone brandishing the Commodore brand, and the modern ‘Commodore 64 Ultimate’ revamp of the legendary 8-bit Commodore 64 home computer.

And now comes the latest modern revamp of retro tech to be announced by Commodore: the return of the TAC-2 joystick from the 1980s. The joystick wasn’t originally a Commodore product at all, but was produced by an American company called Suncom, however, its nine-pin plug meant that the joystick was compatible with the Commodore 64, snd with various other machines of the time, such as the Atari 2600.

The name TAC-2 is an abbreviated form of “Totally Accurate Controller MK2, “ and In the 1980s, the joystick was originally released in a choice of two colors: black, or white.

The new 2026 revamp of the TAC-2 comes in a choice of five variants, some of which are limited editions. There’s black and white as per the original model, but also beige, a Founders Edition, and a Starlight Edition.

Commodore says that: “the new Commodore TAC-2 stays true to the original while improving where it matters.” New features of the joystick include a steel shaft, in place of the original model’s copper tire valve shaft, and a Commodore logo molded into the nine-pin plug.

The Commodore TAC-2 is priced at $64.00 USD or local equivalent, and it’s available to pre-order directly from Commodore now, and is expected to ship around October 20,
