Color Virtual Boy Games Coming to Nintendo 3DS with Red Viper Color

Yesterday, we reported on the new color Virtual Boy emulator VBoy Color, which enables you to play Virtual Boy titles in full color on PC, Android, and VR. And soon you’ll be able to add the Nintendo 3DS to that list of machines that can play Virtual Boy games in full color, as the Nintendo 3DS’s Viruual Boy emulator, Red Viper, is set to get a full color upgrade, in the form of Red Viper Color.

Red Viper Color will utilize the color packs from VBoy Color to colorize the Virtual Boy’s red and black games on the Nintendo 3DS, using both hand-painted packs and automatic color packs from VBoy Color.

Red Viper Color is still a work in progress, so it is not yet available to download, but you can find out more about Red Viper Color on the project’s GitHub page.

Of course, Nintendo’s early attempt at virtual reality, the Virtual Boy, was notoriously a huge flop upon its release back in 1995, so it’s quite heartwarming to see the machine’s games getting another chance, over 30 years on, both via emulators such as Red Viper Color and VBoy Color, and also  via the official releases of Virtual Boy games via Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Classics collection, which we’ve covered previously.
