Moonstone (or to give it its full (and slightly ungrammatical) title, Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight, was a fantasy beat ‘em up-cum-RPG that was originally released on the Amiga 500 back in 1991, before being ported to MS-DOS a year later, in 1992.
At the time of release, the game was notable for its high levels of gore, with publisher Mindscape voluntarily giving the game a “12” rating, in the pre-PEGI era, though it was banned outright in Germany, and it failed to find a US distributor. With Mortal Kombat still a year away, blood and gore in games was still relatively uncommon, as bizarre as that may seem now!
And now. 35 years later, Moonstone will be heading on a new adventure back onto the Amiga, this time in an enhanced version, with “re-imagined visuals and sound,” for 32-bit AGA Amigas such as the Amiga 1200.
Apparently, Moonstone AGA will be released for free sometime this year, and a post on the official Moonstone Facebook page suggests that the game may well be included on Retro Games Ltd.’s forthcoming THE A1200, on which we’ve reported previously. As, in response to post saying the game should be on the device, the official Moonstone page coyly replied: “maybe it still will be?”
