Clever Hub Innovates with NES Expansion Port for Gamers

RetroTime has unveiled a clever use for the rarely utilized expansion port on the bottom of the NES with its new product, the NES Hub. This innovative device brings modern functionality to the nearly 40-year-old console by adding Bluetooth connectivity, allowing up to four wireless controllers to connect seamlessly. The NES Hub is a plug-and-play solution that requires no soldering or hardware modifications—users simply remove the plastic cover shielding the expansion port, clip in the hub, and attach a small Bluetooth antenna to the back of the console.

The NES Hub not only modernizes gameplay by supporting wireless controllers but also mimics the capabilities of Nintendo’s 1990 NES Four Score accessory, enabling four-player support for compatible games like Bomberman 2 and Gauntlet 2. Additionally, it enhances the audio experience by unlocking expansion audio channels for certain Famicom games, improving sound quality. The device also includes three extra ports for connecting peripherals, such as an optional $26 add-on that allows SNES controllers to be used with the NES.

For those looking to customize their setup, the NES Hub can connect to a PC via Bluetooth and access a web-based configuration tool through Google Chrome. This tool enables users to remap buttons or even switch to a keyboard-and-mouse mode for added versatility. Currently available for preorder at $57.28 through 8BitMods, the NES Hub is set to ship in December 2024. This inventive accessory breathes new life into the NES, offering retro gamers a modernized way to enjoy their favorite classics.
