The new homebrew PC game Deck of Time recalls a time before the Windows GUI had become established as the ubiquitous standard operating system for PCs, when PC users would have to get to grips with the command-line interface of MS-DOS to run the vast majority of software (including games, obviously) on their machines, and a number of games that are still renowned as classics today were originally released for the MS-DOS operating system.
The Spanish homebrew developer RubenRetro, on whose Game Boy port of Windows 3.1 we have reported previously, has returned to the days of MS-DOS for his latest project, Deck of Time, a game which he describes as “a humorous blackjack game for MS-DOS, featuring a retro 90s PC gaming aesthetic and a healthy dose of humor.”
And you can even play Deck of Time without fiddling about with MS-DOS commands, as not only is the MS-DOS version of Deck of Time available as a “pay what you like” download via itch.io, but you can also play the game in your browser there, without the need to even install it.
Or, for the full-on retro MS-DOS experience, RubenRetro has even released Deck of Time physically, on 3.5” floppy disk, though, at the time of writing, RubenRetro’s Etsy store is temporarily offline.
