Hero GP set to Speed onto Game Boy Color

Hero GP is a new homebrew motorbike racing game that’s currently in development for the Game Boy Color, and it looks very much like it’s going to be in the vein of arcade racing classics such as Enduro Racer and Hang On but squeezed into Nintendo’s diminutive color handheld.

Hero GP is being developed by Shane McCafferty, who says that his aim with the game is “squeezing the last out of the Game Boy Color“, and his progress so far certainly suggests that he’s succeeding, with the game looking rather fast indeed, with stunning parallax scrolling on the clouds and mountains, as well as plenty of simultaneous on-screen opponents. You can follow the progress of Hero GP via updates on McCafferty’s X account, where today (March 11, 2025) he previewed the game’s snow track.

Despite perhaps being something of a stopgap console between the original monochrome Game Boy (1989) and the 32-bit Game Boy Advance (2000), the Game Boy Color (1998) is certainly popular with homebrew developers these days. In addition to Hero GP, we’ve recently reported on Snout, an all-new Game Boy Color platform game, and even a new Game Boy Color fan port of the original Super Mario Bros. Hero GP developer Shane McCafferty also recently released a subterranean platform game titled Cave Dave for the console.
