Jazz Jackrabbit may not quite be a household name, but of you were a PC gamer back in the 1990s, then chances are you came across this 2D platform game, which was originally released for MS-DOS on a shareware basis back in 1994.
And now, over 30 years after Jazz Jackrabbit’s 2D platforming antics first thrilled PC gamers, Jazz Jackrabbit is making the leap onto the 16-bit Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, albeit in the form of an unauthorized fan port of the game. The port will utilize assets from the original PC version of Jazz Jackrabbit, and it Is currently in development by a homebrew coder named Haroldo Pinheiro, who goes by the handle “Haroldo-ok,” and who specializes in porting games to Sega consoles, having previously ported titles such as the MS-DOS titles Dangerous Dave and Jill of the Jungle, and the HTML5 game Commander Keen to the Sega Master System.
The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive fan port of Jazz Jackrabbit is still a work in progress, but you can download a prototype of the game that the developer describes as “somewhat playable” via itch.io now.
Haroldo-ok isn’t the only Sega homebrew developer to have an interesting-looking fan port in progress. Just yesterday, we reported on another homebrew coder who is being a fan port of Monkey Ball to the Sega Dreamcast.
This won’t be the first time that Jazz Jackrabbit has made the leap from PC to console, with the game having previously received an official port to Game Boy Advance back in 2002.
