MegaBox Reloaded Loads onto Genesis/Mega Drive

MegaBox Reloaded is a new homebrew puzzle adventure game that’s been released both digitally and physically for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

But the game’s origins go even deeper into retro history than Sega’s 16-bit console, because MegaBox Reloaded actually has 8-bit origins, being based on the 8-bit ZX Spectrum Box homebrew series of games, which began with the game Box, which was originally released by Beyker Soft in 2007.

But MegaBox Reloaded isn’t a simple straight port of the original ZX Spectrum Box games, with the game’s publisher PlayonRetro saying that: “rather than simply reproducing the original games, MegaBox Reloaded takes their concept and spirit into a new generation, expanding the experience and rebuilding it specifically for the SEGA Mega Drive/ Genesis,” adding that: the game combines “its 8-bit roots with a completely new 16-bit presentation.”

Features of MegaBox Reloaded include: a two-player mode, in which players take alternating turns; alternative routes to take; an in-game achievement system; game saves; and a choice of five languages: Spanish, English, French, German, and Italian.

MegaBox Reloaded is available now as a digital download on a name-you-own-price basis from itch.io, or as a physical boxed Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge from HobbyRetro  priced at 49,90 €.

I'm a retro gamer and writer who writes about video games for online and print outlets. My love of gaming began way back in 1986 with the ZX Spectrum, before becoming a lifelong Nintendo fan in 1990 with the Game Boy. And although I keep up with modern gaming, we all know you can't beat retro classics (or maybe I'm just old!) https://x.com/paultwist
