OutRun Movie on the Starting Blocks

OutRun is to become the next video game to receive a movie adaptation, according to Deadline.

With the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog live action movies, it’s understandable that Hollywood might be interested in mining more of Sega’s IP for future movies, and while a racing game may seem like an unlikely property to tap for a movie adaptation, 2013 did see the release of a Gran Turismo movie, so it’s not without precedent.

Deadline report that the OutRun movie is currently in development at Universal, with Michael Bay attached to direct and produce the film, and with Jayson Rothwell set to write the scrrenplay. Sydney Sweeney is also attached to produce the film.

Deadline also report that Toru Nakahara will produce the film on behalf of Sega, as he did for the Sonic movies and Knuckles TV show, with Shuji Utsumi overseeing the project for Sega.

OutRun first zoomed onto arcades back in 1986, with a belated sequel, OutRun 2 following in 2003. Both games have also received popular ports to home machines.

Video games have proved a fertile ground for movie and TV adaptations in recent years, such as the aforementioned Gran Turismo, the recent A Minecraft Movie, HBO’s The Last of Us, and Amazon Prime’s Fallout.
