Of all the games to receive a fan port to the Neo Geo, Rick Dangerous is perhaps one of the most unlikely. Originally developed by Core Design, who would later go on to create the pop culture phenomenon Tomb Raider, Rick Dangerous was released by Firebird for a variety of 8-bit and 16-bit home computers in 1989. Rick Dangerous is an Indiana Jones-inspired platform game that soon became notorious for its punishing difficulty, for which it is still renowned today.
This new fan port of Rick Dangerous, titled Rick Dangerous DX, is by Z-team, who have also ported the game to Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, as we reported previously.
As per the aforementioned Sega Genesis port, the new Neo Geo port of Rick Dangerous is based on an earlier fan port of the game for the Nintendo Wii from 2008.
Rick Dangerous DX is compatible with Neo Geo AES/MVS and Neo Geo CD models, via flashcard loading, using a deveice such as an Everdrive.
The Rick Dangerous DX ROM for Neo Geo is available now on a “name your own price,” basis, via itch.io.
While the Neo Geo is a relatively popular format for homebrew developers, who have released new aftermarket games for the format, such as Project Neon and Final Vendetta, on both of which we have reported previously, we don’t seem to see many fan ports of classic titles for the format, making this Rick Dangerous fan port seem even mire unusual!
