Sunsoft Revives 80s Maze Racer Route-16

The recently revived Sunsoft has announced that it is bringing back the Route-16 series of overhead racing games.

The Route-16 series will be getting an all-new modern title in the form of Route-16 R, which will be the first new entry in the series for over 40 years, following 1985’s Route-16 Turbo for Famicom, though this game and its arcade parent have seen re-releases on several modern formats in the intervening years.

Joining the standalone release of the all-new Route-16 R, Sunsoft will also be releasing the Route-16 Collection, which will include new game, along with the original 1981 arcade version of Route-16, and the 1985 Famicom title Route-16 Turbo, offering all three games in the Route-16 series in one package. This collection will be exclusively available for Nintendo Switch, though Route-16R will also receive a digital release on Steam, and Route 16-Turbo will receive a solo digital download release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Steam, and the original Route-16 will also receive an individual digital download release on Nintendo Switch, via Hamster Corporation.

Pre-orders for the physical collector’s edition and standard editions of the Route-16 Collection for Nintendo Switch are open now, on Amazon Japan, with all of these Route-16 titles are set to release on August 6, 2026.
