Streets of Rage 2: New Era v3 Out Now

Streets of Rage 2: New Era is a fan-made remake of the classic Sega Genesis/Mega Drive brawler, built from the ground up for modern platforms, created by reverse engineering the original game.

Version 3 of Streets of Rage 2: New Era was released yesterday, on January 1st 2026.

Features of Streets of Rage 2: New Era v3 include: Classic Mode, which is a 1:1 recreation of the original game; 30th Anniversary Mode, which enhances the original Streets of Rage 2 with widescreen support; fluid controls; and bug fixes; a new bonus game mode called Ninpo Kage Bunshin Mode; two new, harder difficulty modes called ‘Mania Plus,’ and ‘Megamania; local and online co-op for up to four players; global online score leaderboards and built-in speedrun splits; a replay system that provides the ability to record and watch gameplay; and support for custom mods.

Streets of Rage 2: New Era v3 is available now as a free download for Windows, MacOS, Linux, and Android.

Although Streets of Rage 2: New Era is a standalone app that does not require an emulator, the developers do assert that in order to play Streets of Rage 2: New Era, you must own a legitimate Streets of Rage 2 ROM that has been saved to the device on which you are playing Streets of Rage 2: New Era.
