Are you a Nintendo-curious Sega Master System owner who secretly wishes that you could play that game about mushroom-chomping plumbers from the rival 8-bit NES console? Well, thanks to a new fan port, now, you can!
Yes, a fan port of the NES classic Super Mario Bros. has, indeed, been developed for the Sega Master System, by a homebrew developer who goes by the handle of LackofTrack, an it’s available to download now, for free, via the SMS Power website.
Features promised in the Sega Master System Super Mario Bros. port include: near-perfect accuracy; a new graphics model that’s based on the SNES version of the game from Super Mario All-Stars; and a new sound mode that’s based the soundtrack from Super Mario All-Stars, that takes advantage of the Japanese Sega Master System’s YM2413 FM synthesizer.
So now, thanks to this fan port, you can now enjoy Mario’s legendary 8-bit platforming outing on Sega hardware! It still feels a bit wrong to us, like when Sonic (officially) made his way onto the GBA and Wii! But in a world where XBOX games can now be played on PlayStation hardware, maybe it makes sense that you can also play Super Mario Bros. on the Sega Master System! And this isn’t even the first Nintendo to Sega fan port we’ve seen in recent months, having previously reported on a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive fan port of the Game Boy version of Tetris.
