Sony Launches PlayStation Timeline Website to Celebrate 30 Years of Gaming

Sony Interactive Entertainment has launched a new PlayStation history timeline website to celebrate the upcoming 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand on December 3, 2024. This interactive site offers a comprehensive look at the history of PlayStation consoles, highlighting key milestones, innovations, and sales achievements across all generations of the platform.

One of the most notable revelations from this website is the confirmation that the PlayStation 2 has officially surpassed 160 million units sold worldwide since its launch in 2000, cementing its position as the best-selling video game console of all time. While it was previously estimated that PS2 sales were around 159 million, this is Sony’s first official acknowledgment of the 160 million milestone. The PlayStation 2 remains ahead of other top-selling consoles like the Nintendo DS (154.02 million) and the Nintendo Switch (146 million as of now).

The timeline also provides updated sales figures for other PlayStation systems:

  • PlayStation (1994–2006): 102 million units
  • PlayStation 3 (2006–present): 87 million units
  • PlayStation 4 (2013–present): 117 million units

This new website not only celebrates past successes but also reflects Sony’s ongoing legacy in gaming as it looks toward future innovations.

I'm Mubarak AlSabah, born in '87, and I'm a big fan of retro games. I’ve been gaming since '93, so it's been a lifelong passion for me. Collecting retro games is my favorite hobby, and I have a great collection that takes you back in time. In addition to gaming, I also have 830+ premium domain names, which is another hobby that I love just as much. I started collecting domains in '97, combining my interest in the digital world with my love for nostalgic gaming.
