Retro-inspired roguelite Katanaut demo launched

Katanaut is a new action roguelite inspired by classic Metroidvania and action platformers. The game is due to launch on Steam later this year but now has a demo available as part of this month’s Steam Next Fest. It is set on a massive space station that went through a mysterious accident. With the station slowly spiralling out of control, and its once-human inhabitants twisted into terrors, players are tasked with uncovering what is going on.

Players are also given the chance to experiment with different weapons, guns, and abilities to create a strategy that matches their style. Katanaut also has a unique mixture of hand-crafted and procedurally generated levels where it could be a quick and easy run or an intense onslaught of surprises. According to developer Voidmaw, it’s a “pixel-art universe where all the details are refined and designed by hand. All to inspire the unsettling beauty of this cosmic nightmare!”

The gameplay seems varied and players will be armed with unlockable melee weapons, guns, and magic-like abilities while facing an evolving gauntlet of horrors, as the station warps around them.
