The popularity of OutRun, Sega’s seminal arcade racer, has endured for nearly four decades now, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Indeed, we’ve recently reported on an in-development blockbuster Hollywood movie based on OutRun, as well as a fan-made Lego kit based on OutRun.
And now, the latest development in the blue-skied world of OutRun is that a fan port of the original game is in production for the GameBoy Color.
GameBoy homebrew developer Shane McCafferty realised that OutRun has never been ported to Nintendo’s colorful handheld machine, and he’s decided to rectify the situation, as he recently announced on X, where he’s also posted work-in-progress video of the port, which is already looking rather nippy indeed!
As the developer of the recently released fast-paced GameBoy Color arcade racer Hero GP, on which we have previously reported, McCafferty would appear to be the perfect developer to handle porting OutRun to the GameBoy Color, so we’re expecting the finished product to be a real winner.
OutRun was first released into arcades by Sega back in 1986, and it has been ported to a number of home formats over the years, including to the GameBoy Advance, but never to the GameBoy Color, until now, that is!
