OutRun Demo Races onto Game Boy Color

OutRun Game Boy Color

An OutRun fan port that aims to answer the question “what if OutRun came to Game Boy?” is in the works from Game Boy homebrew developer Shane McCafferty, as we previously reported, and you can now play a bit of it, because Shane McCafferty has released a free demo of his OutRun fan port.

In a cheeky post on X, McCafferty said “Hi @SEGA, let’s talk about a full game! Now, wouldn’t that be something, if Sega actually took note and released Shane McCafferty’s Game Boy Color OutRun fan port as an official game?!

McCafferty is not the only fan port developer to reach out to the rights holder of the game being ported in the hope of making it official. We previously reported on a Commodore 64 fan port of indie hit Balatro who was seeking to make his port official, by contacting the game’s publisher, PlayStack.

Shane McCafferty’s previous Game Boy Color title, Hero GP, on which we previously reported, was a high-speed arcade racer that might well have been a proof of concept for OutRun on Game Boy Color. So, how about it, Sega?

OutRun’s popularity has endured ever since Sega first released the game into arcades nearly four decades ago, in 1986. As we previously reported, a Hollywood movie adaptation of the game is even in the works from director Michael Bay!

The free demo of Shane McCafferty’s OutRun fan port is available to download now from his itch.io page.
