Hot on the heels of the news that Doom is getting a new SNES release, Undeadline, another classic shooter, is also getting the rerelease treatment. Announced by Retro-Bit, Undeadline had been a Japanese exclusive Genesis shmup that is rare to get hold of these days. This was due to the limited distribution back in 1991 when it was first released, and no publisher took it outside of Japan.
The horror-themed shooter was originally released in 1989 for the MSX and was seen as refreshing from the usual spaceships and aliens the shooter genre was known for. The gaming press at the time reviewed it well and it is renowned among the shooter community as one of the hardest blasters to finish. Undeadline has been localized for the West by Nathan Deren with translations by Jonathan Antonioli.
The game comes in a special collector’s edition that includes a special colored cartridge, full color manual, individually numbered commemorative slipcover, reversible inlay featuring exclusive artwork from Zander Martinez of Zander6comix, and an art card set from the same designer. Pre-orders are open now and will run until the 1oth of August 2025 from various retailers around the world. Undeadline is expected to be released in the last quarter of 2025.
