A new game by Ron Gilbert was amongst the announcements at last night’s opening night of Gamescom.
Of course, Ron Gilbert is best known to us retro gamers as the creator of classic point & click adventures such as Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island, but Ron Gilbert’s latest game, titled Death by Scrolling is something of a departure from his most famous works, while still retaining definite retro credentials. Death by Scrolling has been described as “vertical scrolling Rogue-like RPG,” and the game boasts retro-style pixel art graphics, and appears to be in the vein of the likes of Vampire Survivors, and it also looks like a lot of fun. In Death by Scrolling, the player has to o escape the depths of Purgatory, which is apparently “under new management”! Yes, the genre of game may be a bit of a departure for Ron Gilbert, but it seems like it’s going to be packed with Ron Gilbert’s trademark sense of humor!
Once we got over our initial disappointment that the new game from Ron Gilbert wasn’t a new point & click adventure, we soon became impressed by what we saw.
So far, Death by Scrolling has only been announced for PC, on which it will be published by Microprose Software, and the game can already be wishlisted on Steam. A release date for |Death by Scrolling is not yet known, with the Steam page listing the game as “coming soon”.
