The Intellivision Sprint, a new plug and play console based on the Atari 2600’s rival format, Intellivision, is set to be released by Atari, in conjunction with PLAION REPLAI.
Originally released by Mattel in 1979, two years after the Atari 2600, the Intelivision was the greatest rival to Atari’s all-conquering console, and the Intellivision was only officially discontinued as late as 1990!
And now, as announced at Portland’s Retro Gaming Expo, to celebrate Intellivision’s 45th anniversary, in what’s perhaps the most unlikely team up of former video game rivals since Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Atari is reviving the Intellivision in the form of the Intellivision Sprint.
The Intellivision Sprint will include 45 on-board games, which will be: Armour Battle; Astrosmash; Auto Racing; B-17 Bomber; Baseball; Body Slam: Super Pro Wrestling; Bomb Squad; Boulder Dash; Bowling; Buzz Bombers; Chip Shot: Super Pro Golf; Deep Pockets: Super Pro Pool & Billiards; Frog Bog; Golf; Hover Force; and King of the Mountain.
Included in the Intellivision Sprint will be: the Intellivision Sprint console; two wireless Controllers; 48 double-sided overlays; a USB Power Adapter; and an HDMI cable.
“It has been rewarding to apply some of the learnings from our successful collaboration on the Atari+ retro consoles to the Intellivison Sprint,” said Ben Jones, Commercial Director of PLAION REPLAI. “We’re proud to bring a modern take on this ground-breaking console to Intellivision fans and collectors.”
The Intellivision Sprint is set to launch in the USA and Australia on December 5th, and in Europe on December 23rd, with pre-orders direct from Atari open now.
