We previously covered the homebrew NES Metroidvania adventure sequel Mawthorne 2, reporting on its hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, and then on the game’s general release.
Now, the developers of the Mawthorne games, CrazyGroupTrio, have taken to X to announce that the next Mawthorne game has now finished development and will be released “soon-ish, probably maybe”.
The next Mawthorne homebrew NES adventure by CrazyGroupTrio will be titled “Mawthorne I Reborn,” and it will be an enhanced version of the original Mawthorne game, that was originally released for NES in 2022 before also receiving a port to Sega Dreamcast.
Mawthorne I Reborn is the original Mawthorne game, but it has been remade using Mawthorne 2’s engine “for a better and smoother experience.” A small physical release of the game is planned alongside its digital release, with the game expected to release this year.
All of CrazyGroupTrio’s previous NES releases, including the sci-fi adventure Tryptic; the arcade-style platform game Shera & the 40 Thieves; and both Mawthorne games; are still available to purchase as downloadable NES ROMs from CrazyGroupTrio’s itch.io page, but If you’d like to play Mawthorne, it’s probably worth waiting for the release of the enhanced Mawthorne I Reborn, which is hopefully not too far away. Plese note: the video embedded below shows the original NES version of Mawthorne, as released in 2022.
