Sega Arcade Smash Zaxxon Blasting Onto Atari 2600 This Year

Zaxxon is a 1981 arcade shooter developed by Sega and ported to almost every major platform in the following years. It’s best known as one of the first games to use axonometric projection, a technique that creates a pseudo-3D effect. The game was a huge hit when released in arcades and helped cement Sega as a major player in the market. Now, thanks to the great work of the Atari homebrew company, Champ Games, it will be making its debut on the Atari 2600.

Announced during a ZeroPage Homebrew Twitch stream, Zaxxon Arcade will be available as a demo ROM in the next few weeks, with the full release expected towards the end of the year. The game features amazing axonometric graphics provided by Nathan Strum, and includes all of the levels, enemies, and obstacles from both the original arcade game and its sequel Super Zaxxon.

In a press statement released on Facebook, the Atari homebrewers said. “Champ Games is happy to announce that the secret game we’ve been developing is Zaxxon Arcade for the Atari 2600, revealed today on ZeroPage Homebrew‘s Twitch stream channel! Planned exclusive additions to the game include new levels, enemies, obstacles, and power-ups for the ultimate Zaxxon experience on your Atari 2600!”
