Alien Strike is a new pixel art action platformer from developer Combo Game Studio and publisher Nuntius Games. We first reported on it when a demo launched a few months back. It’s out now on Steam, priced at $9.99, with a 20% discount currently applied. The developer has said that Alien Strike aims to “modernize old arcade games”, and that a console release date will be announced soon.
The game features at least 2 hours of gameplay on the first run and a high replay factor. The game includes full voice acting in English and Portuguese, as well as localized interface and subtitles in 8 additional languages. Although heavily inspired by iconic ’90s franchises such as Metal Slug and Contra, the game also features gameplay tools and mechanics designed for players accustomed to modern gaming elements.
Alien Strike also features several tributes and references for fans of classic games such as Metal Slug, Contra, Death Note, The King of Fighters, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In addition, the game includes environments inspired by the developers’ hometown, the historic city of Santos, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Alien Strike also received a full-size arcade machine version, supporting up to three players simultaneously on the same cabinet.
Regarding the feeling of launching the game today, Alyson Monteiro, Art Director of the game, says: “It feels like a dream come true. Alien Strike was an ambitious project that, together with my partner Jean Pierre, we slowly turned into reality. For me, it’s the biggest project of my life.” According to Alyson, the goal is to “Bring the nostalgic feeling of ’90s run ’n’ gun games to newer players, as well as to those who lived through the arcade era”.
