We’ve been following the release of Echoes of the Unread, a new NES platformer from Mega Cat Studios, 8 Bit Legit, and Clever Cat Games. The last news was the announcement that the game was heading to Steam later this year, and now a demo of the Steam port has been released. The NES carts, successfully funded by a recent Kickstarter, have already been shipped as the developers turn their attentions to the PC port.
The free Echoes of the Unread demo invites players to step into the enchanted library alongside Rhapsody as she awakens to a world where books have burst into life, and her singing voice holds the power to shape everything around her. The demo features a portion of the library itself as well as the game’s first full zone, the Wild West, where Rhapsody must explore a sandswept frontier town, befriend its colorful inhabitants, and collect lost pages that hold the key to finding her way back home.
“The Steam demo of Echoes of the Unread adds features I wanted to put in the NES game, but wasn’t able to due to console limitations. It almost feels like a remastered version,” said Matt Tuttle, the game’s creator and founder of Clever Cat Games. “There’s an added inventory to help track your progress. Controller vibration to increase the immersion when exploring the library. Backgrounds to accommodate widescreen monitors. And the dialogue is easier to read with a new font that includes lowercase and has proper line spacing.”
