Tetris fan port set to drop onto Genesis/Mega Drive

Almost unbelievably, the Genesis/Mega Drive never received an official port of Tetris, as even though an official port of Tetris was developed for the  Genesis/Mega Drive, its release was cancelled due to the game’s notoriously complex licensing agreements.

While the Genesis/Mega Drive version of Tetris would see see official releases in arcade form for Sega’s Mega-Tech arcade system in 1989, theen as part of the Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol.28 Tetris Collection for PlayStation 2 in 2006, a standalone Genesis/Mega Drive release of Tetris never materialized.

But now, a Genesis/Mega Drive developer by the name of AAR has begun work on porting the iconic Game Boy version of Tetris to the Genesis/Mega Drive.

On his website, AAR describes his in-progress Genesis/Mega Drive port of Tetris as: “a small tribute to one of my favorite games, which I still play on my old Game Boy.”

It seems that, unlike the game’s lines of Tetronimoes, the popularity of Tetris will never disappear. Indeed, as we reported at the time, last year, BAFTA crowned Tetris the “most influential game of all time,” following a public vote. The game also seems popular with homebrew developers, as in addition to this new Genesis/Mega Drive fan port of the game, last year saw a new enhanced poet of Tetris 2 for the ZX Spectrum under the title Tetris Championship Edition, as we also reported at the time.

My love of gaming began way back in 1986 with the ZX Spectrum, before becoming a lifelong Nintendo fan in 1990 with the Game Boy. And although I keep up with modern gaming, we all know you can't beat retro classics (or maybe I'm just old!) https://x.com/paultwist
