Barbie certainly wasn’t the next franchise we expected to be getting the the retro compilation treatment from Digital Eclipse and Atari, but here we are. Barbie Rewind is a forthcoming compilation of 16 Barbie games from the 1990s and 2000s; two of which, Barbie Vacation Adventure for SNES and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, have never been released before); along with a brand new Barbie DreamHouse design game.
Perhaps, given the immense success of 2023’s Barbie movie, we should’ve seen this coming. And Barbie Rewind serves as a reminder rhat the enduringly famous doll was a pop culture icon for many a year before her post-modern cinematic outing, spawning a number of video games throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and even a Marvel Comics series that ran through much of the 1990s.
In addition to the two unreleased 16-bit versions of Barbie Vacation Adventure, the 16 retro games included on Barbie Rewind, that were originally released between 1991 and 2007, will include Barbie Pet Rescue (Game Boy Color, 2000) and Barbie Horse Adventures: Blue Ribbon Race (Game Boy Advance, 2003).
“We are excited to bring a new Barbie DreamHouse game and this wonderful collection of historic titles to a new generation of players,” said Mike Mika, Studio Head at Digital Eclipse. “Barbie Rewind celebrates Barbie’s contributions to 65+ years of fashion, decor and more through the unique lens of video games, connecting with longtime fans and modern audiences with an unmistakable pink charm.”
Barbie Rewind will launch on November 12 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game will be available digitally for $29.99 USD, while the physical PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch versions will be priced at $29.99 USD for the Standard Edition and $59.99 USD for the Deluxe Edition.
Pre-orders for both the digital and physical editions of Barbie Rewind are open now at atari.com. The Barbie Rewind Deluxe Physical Edition for Nintendo Switch comes in a premium, numbered box and includes an exclusive doll wearing an Atari t-shirt and blue jeans with long blonde hair with pink streaks and a full-color poster.
The announcement of Barbie Rewind follows another recent toy-oriented announcement from Digital Eclipse and Atari, namely Toy Story: Retro Roundup! & Toy Story 3 Complete Edition, on which we reported previously.
