Retro World Cup Round-Up

As you can’t fail to have noticed, even if you have no interest in soccer, the World Cup is currently in full swing, and World Cup fever seems rampsging through the world of retro gaming, too, so, with that in mind, we thought it was the ideal time to bring you a retro World Cup round-up.

Retro World Cup titles on which we’ve previously reported have included a World Cup 2026 makeover for Kevin Toms’ seminal ZX Spectrum Football Manager game, and QUByte’s recently released World Cup-themed platform game compilation, Soccer Kid Collection.

New 8 and 32-bit homebrew soccer games have also been released recently for popular home computer formats. These include: a quirky looking game for the ZX Spectrum titled Mundial 2026, which is described as “a multi-choice game with some RPG elements.” In the game, you have to help Chechia (who are described by the game’s developer, Petr Kain, as as “probably the worst team in the 2026 World Cup.” Mundial 2026 is oavailable now as a free download via itch.io.

Meanwhile, on the 32-bit Amiga 1200 home computer, the homebrew arcade-style soccer game Mundialito 2 has been released by developer Acneproduction.

Acneproduction says that Mundialito 2 offers: “new gameplay, frenetic action, and 32 teams competing for the World Cup. You can also compete in the four major European leagues.” Mundialito 2 is available to download for $9.99 USD from itch.io, where you’ll also find a free demo of the game to try before you buy.

So, with both re-released retro titles for modern formats and all-new retro World Cup homebrew games for retro formats, there’s sure to be a retro World cup game to suit you!

I'm a retro gamer and writer who writes about video games for online and print outlets. My love of gaming began way back in 1986 with the ZX Spectrum, before becoming a lifelong Nintendo fan in 1990 with the Game Boy. And although I keep up with modern gaming, we all know you can't beat retro classics (or maybe I'm just old!) https://x.com/paultwist
