Duke Nukem Now Kicking Ass on Atari ST

Both Duke Nukem and the Atari Mega STE computer celebrate their 35th anniversaries this year, but as the homebrew coder Neil Rackett points out on his X account: “1991 gave us two icons: Duke Nukem and the Atari Mega STE — but sadly they never met… Until now!”

Yes, the original 2D platform game incarnation of Duke Nukem has received a fan port to the 16-bit Atari Mega STE computer, and it’s available to download now.

Duke Nukem was originally released by Apogee Software in 1991 for MS-DOS, most recently receiving a release in a remastered form on Evercade in 2023, as part of the Duke Nukem Collection 1 cartridge.

The Atari Mega STE computer, for which Duke Nukem has received a new fan port, was the final iteration of Atari’s ST line to be released, before being superseded by the Atari Falcon a year later in 1992. Today, the Atari Falcon is being used to produce the new Atari Legacy magazine, on which we reported previously.

Previous Duke Nukem fan ports have included a fan port of the 1996 title Duke Nukem 3D for the Sega Dreamcast, on which we reported previously.

This new Atari ST fan port of Duke Nukem features the full episode 1 (shareware version) of Duke Nukem, and it requires the original game graphics and level data to run. You can find the Atari ST port of Duke Nukem, along with full instructions of how to run it via GitHub.
