New (Free) DotEmu Game Blasterbug Explodes onto Steam

Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing is a new game from DotEmu, a publisher and developer that has serious neo-retro gaming credentials, having previously developed and published the likes of the 2D Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, pixel art beat ‘em up Marvel: Cosmic Invasion, the popular retro-inspired brawler Absolum, Streets of Rage 4, Windjammers 2, and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.

And for its latest game, DotEmu seems to have drawn on Hudson Soft’s classic Bomberman for inspiration. In Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing, colorful bug heroes battle in ever-changing arenas, with local multiplayer available for with up to eight players. Fans of Dotemu’s Absolum can even add that game’s Galandra to the game, via paid DLC.

Dotemu says of its new game that: “Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! is fueled by arcade-style action classics fans know and love, adding bite-sized party fun with unique features like special attacks and levels modifiers for a swarm of mayhem. The highly replayable, “just one more round” battles span 15 playable bug-filled areas, each with its own gameplay twist. Trap your opponents in Bugville, swim the currents of the Sewers and, of course, avoid the dreamcrushing spoon’s attacks in the Kitchen. Don’t wing it – use each environment to your advantage and get those fly wins.”

It seems that Bomberman-style games are perennial ly popular, with us having previously reported on a collection of the Super Bomberman titles, and a recent new Bomberman-inluenced Amiga homebrew title by the name of Kaboomania, which we’ll be reviewng soon.

Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing was shadow dropped onto Steam yesterday,  after being announced during yesterday’s Pixel Arcadia stream, on which we reported previously.
