New Super Mario Bros. U 2D Edition is a currently in-development pixel art fan remake/demake of the Wii U’s 2D Mario platformer New Super Mario Bros. U.
New Super Mario Bros. U was originally released on the Wii U in 2012, before receiving a Nintendo Switch port in 2019. The game followed on from the first New Super Mario Bros. game, which was released on the Nintendo DS back in 2006, and which was later followed by New Super Mario Bros. Wii in 2009.
And now, the Wii U instalment of the series has been reimagined in a pixel art style that’s reminiscent of the mustachioed plumber’s beloved 16-bit outing on the Super Nintendo, Super Mario World, albeit very unofficially, with the fan game New Super Mario Bros. U 2D Edition currently being developed for PC and Android by the homebrew developer Wolfmaik Wooah, and you can follow the game’s progress via the project’s dedicated Discord server.
Despite Nintendo being notoriously litigious, Mario certainly sems to be irresistible to homebrew developers, as shown by the forthcoming New Super Mario Bros. U 2D Edition, and also by the other Mario homebrew fan games on which we’ve reported recently, such as Mario Bros. Mayhem, and an enhanced remake of Super Mario Land for Game Boy.
