Mario Bros. go mad for Multiplayer in Mario Bros. Mayhem

Earlier today we reported on the forthcoming Donkey Kong Country 4 fan game, but ol’ Donkey isn’t the only beloved Nintendo IP that’s receiving an appealing, if copyright infringing, fan game treatment! The homebrew developer VyletBunni (or Sarah, to give her her legal name) has released version 1.0.0 of her Mario Bros. fan game, Mario Bros. Mayhem, which she began developing three years ago, before getting distracted by her Deltarune fan game, Deltarune Interdream.

Mario Bros. Mayhem is an updated version of Nintendo’s classic (pre-Super) Mario Bros. arcade game, that Vylet Bunni says makes “heavy reference” to the Gameboy Advance remake of the game, as well as adding new features, such as player customization, game customization, and eight-player online multiplayer, with plans to add four-player local play in a later version.

We’re pretty sure everyone reading this site will have at least passing familiarity with the original Mario Bros. game, but if it somehow passed you by, it was a single-screen platformer for one or two pplayers that was originally released into arcades by Nintendo in 1983, before receiving a number of home ports to the formats of the day (and not just on Nintendo hardware! These truly were different times! The Game Boy Advance remake of Mario Bros., from which Mario Bros. Mayhem has drawn much inspiration, was included on all of the handheld’s Super Mario Advance games, starting with 2001’s Super Mario Advance, and it was also included on the GBA’s Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga.

Super Mario Bros. Mayhem is out now on PC, available as a free download via Game Jolt.
