Darkula is an arcade-style platform game that is, according to its developer, Locomalito, in the style of an “arcade game from 1983,” drawing influence from “classic arcade games like Mappy, Bomb Jack, Mouser, Arabian, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Monster Bash, Mr. Do’s Castle, Fantasy, Ponpoko, and many more.”
While Darkula was originally released on PC back in 2019, the game will soon be receiving a port to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, n the form of Mega Darkula.
This new port of the game will offer dedicated 16-bit graphics and a new soundtrack from the original Darkula composer, Gryzor87.
Mega Darkula will also feature publisher PlayOnRetro‘s MEGAQR system, which allows players to connect their achievements on classic hardware with PlayOnRetro‘s online environment, and compete for a place in the rankings, effectively bringing the modern functionality of an online leaderboard to a game that’s running on a retro 16-bit console!
While a release date for Mega Darkula has not yet been announced, PlayOnRetro has promised that it will be “very soon” in a post on X, and in the meantime, you can download a demo of Mega Darkula via itch.io, on a name your own price basis.
Mega Darkula’s publisher, PlayOnRetro, also recently published the homebrew Sega Genesis/Mega Drive title MegaBox Reloaded, as we reported previously.
