Retro-inspired Deckbuilder Toxic Frontier Announced At Tokyo Game Show

Toxic Frontier is a new retro-inspired roguelike deckbuilder from developer Mint Gate Games and publisher Meteorbyte Studios, due to be released in early 2027. It was unveiled at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, which coincides with the Tokyo Game Show. The developers of Toxic Frontier say that they “challenge the claim that there are no new card-based roguelike ideas”.

Blending a strategic city-builder with the immediacy and endless permutations of card-based roguelikes, Meteorbyte Studios are upending tropes of both genres. Toxic Frontier also challenges the themes these games normally explore, offering a refreshingly pessimistic view on hex-based city expansion, all realised in lurid post-nuclear pixel art.

Played out across a traditional hex grid, players’ll start from a single humble tile and begin their settlement’s perilous pilgrimage into the wastes. Purifying the noxious landscape with each card they place on a tile, they’ll discover synergies that change how each run plays. Players must make sure they reach the target score on each level, or they’ll soon run out of cards, and their legend in the frontier will come to an abrupt, irradiated end.

Key features of Toxic Frontier:

Play the hand you’re dealt: +40 unique cards to unlock and collect

Turn the toxic tide: Increasingly complex and potent tile synergies to discover

Don’t forget your Geiger counter: New challenges and threats to face in every biome

Radioactive replayability: 4 game modes with 2 different story endings

Explore the Frontier on the move: Full Steam Deck support
