We’ve reported on a number of game creation tools for retro formats recently, such as Kwyll for the Spectrum Next, RetroGameForge for NES and SNES, and MD Engine for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and soon to be joining them is SMS Game Maker, a game creation tool for the Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear that’s currently downloadable from itch.io in its alpha status.
SMS Game Maker is being developed by the homebrew developer Juntelart, who usually focuses on ZX Spectrum homebrew development, and who previously developed the ZX Spectrum Game Maker game creation tool, on which he has based his new tool, SMS Game Maker.
SMS Game Maker offers support for the development of both Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear games, with the ability to develop multi-stage games with up to six levels, and projects created in ZX Spectrum Game Maker can even be ported into SMS Game Maker.
Master System games created in SMS Game Maker will run in full TV resolution (256×192), while Game Gear games will scale to its portable screen (160×144).
